How to Identify Termites
Subterranean termites live in the soil and build pencil-width mud tubes up foundation walls to reach wood framing. Winged swarmers — often mistaken for flying ants — emerging indoors in spring are one of the clearest early signs of an active colony nearby.
Signs You May Have a Problem
- Mud tubes running up the foundation, piers, or crawlspace walls
- Wood that sounds hollow when tapped, or is soft/damaged along the grain
- Discarded wings near windowsills or door thresholds after a spring swarm
