Mice & Rats

Deer mice, house mice, and rats moving into attics, crawlspaces, and outbuildings as weather cools.

How to Identify Mice & Rats

House mice and deer mice are the most common rodents found indoors across Sanpete and Juab Counties, with rats more common on properties with outbuildings, livestock feed, or grain storage. Both chew through wiring and insulation and contaminate stored food with droppings and urine.

Signs You May Have a Problem

  • Droppings along baseboards, in cabinets, or in the attic/crawlspace
  • Gnaw marks on wiring, boxes, or wood framing
  • Scratching sounds in walls or the attic, especially at night

Why It Matters

Rodents can carry hantavirus, which is a genuine concern in rural Utah properties with long-vacant outbuildings or sheds — droppings shouldn't be swept or vacuumed dry. Trapping alone rarely solves an infestation for good; pairing interior trapping with exterior exclusion is what stops the same opening from being used again next season.
